Here’s the Transcript of today’s Episode:
We often associate slavery with physical bondage, where individuals are held against their will and stripped of their autonomy. There is another form of slavery that transcends physical chains, and that is the slavery of the mind.
On the surface, we may believe we are free individuals, making choices and shaping our lives. However, when we take a closer look, we realize that our freedom might be an illusion, and we are bound by numerous unseen forces.
It is then that the quote by Francis of Assisi might come handy:
[Music]
Remember that when you leave this earth,
you can take with you, nothing that you have received.
Only what you have given.
A full heart, enriched by honest service,
love, sacrifice, and courage.
[Music]
Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone, better known as Francis of Assisi was an Italian mystic and Catholic friar who founded the Franciscans. Inspired to lead a life of poverty as an itinerant preacher, he offers a powerful reminder of the importance of inner richness over material possessions.
The profound wisdom captured in these words, reminds us of the true essence of our existence. In this fleeting journey of life, we often place great importance on material possessions, achievements, and external recognition. However, these words serve as a powerful reminder that our legacy lies not in what we accumulate for ourselves, but in the quality of life we offer.
A “full heart” is not measured by the abundance of possessions which can be anyway the result of many different circumstances a vast number of these beyond our own grasp, but by the depth of compassion -and love- we extend to those around us. True fulfillment can be found when we live a life of honest service, extending ourselves beyond self-interests and dedicating our efforts to the well-being and upliftment of all.
Love, sacrifice, and courage, are essential components of a life well-lived. Love enables us to connect deeply with others, to empathize, and to contribute to the happiness and healing of those in need while teaching ourselves to open up to the marvelous world, outside. Sacrifice reminds us of the power of selflessness, of putting the needs of others -even those we don’t yet know or fully understand- before our own, and of making choices that benefit the greater good, and we are an intrinsic part of it. Courage guides us to step outside our comfort zones, to take risks in the name of truth, justice, and compassion, and to stand up for what we believe in, and in turn inspire others.
This unwavering commitment to love, service, sacrifice, and courage is not limited to the context in which the previous quote originated. It is a theme that resonates across time and cultures, including the teachings of the renowned Persian poet and mystic, Rumi, to whom we dedicated Episode number 1 of these series.
Rumi’s teachings, in the same manner, emphasize the transformative power of love and the importance of selfless devotion. He invites us to look beyond our individual selves and connect with the divine love that flows through us and all beings.
Similarly, in the teachings of Yoga Vasishta, we find that bondage can manifest in the realm of the mind. As a young Rama once expressed, these teachings emphasize the profound impact of mental limitations on our perception of freedom.
They all teach us, that by surrendering our ego, by embracing compassion, and by serving others, we find true fulfillment and become instruments of divine love in the world, and we are reminded of the profound truth, that our ultimate purpose lies not in what we accumulate for ourselves, but in how we enrich life for all, leaving a lasting impact on the world and carrying with us a full heart that transcends the boundaries of time and space.

The mind can become a prison of its own making. We can be bound by societal norms, cultural expectations, and our own self-imposed limitations. These invisible chains can be just as restrictive as physical ones, trapping us in a life that lacks meaning and, frankly, true freedom.
It’s educative to reflect on the paradox that despite not being literal slaves, many of us willingly surrender our freedom. We conform to societal expectations, follow prescribed paths, and limit ourselves based on fear or comfort. But why do we do this? What drives us to accept a life of slavery when freedom is within our grasp?
It can be thought that one reason is the fear of the unknown. Stepping outside our comfort zones requires embracing uncertainty and taking risks. This fear of the unfamiliar can lead us to cling to the perceived safety of our current situations, even if they are limiting our freedom.
Breaking free from the chains of slavery requires courage, and a willingness to confront our fears. It involves questioning societal norms, challenging our beliefs, and daring to forge our own paths. But how can we begin this process of liberation?

Self-awareness plays a vital role, when we begin this process of liberation. We must examine the areas in which we feel restricted or enslaved. Is it our career choices, relationships, or the expectations we place on ourselves? By identifying these areas, we can start to unravel the chains that bind us and explore alternatives that align with our authentic selves.
In the vast realm of liberation stories accessible to all today, a key lesson resonates: liberation is not a destination, but an ongoing journey. It calls for consistent self-reflection, intentional decisions, and a willingness to embrace discomfort, as it is a part of life, in pursuit of personal growth. It’s important to note that this journey doesn’t have to be laborious, as conscious choices can seamlessly integrate into our daily lives. Discomfort is also relative, especially when we have a clear vision of an enlightened goal.
When we actively seek freedom, we liberate ourselves from the limitations that hinder our progress. Let us embark on this transformative journey, breaking free from the shackles that hold us back.

It’s about reclaiming our power, recognizing that we have the ability to shape our own lives and define our own paths. It’s a conscious decision to live a life that is aligned with our values, passions, and true desires.
Unconscious conformity to societal expectations, adherence to prescribed paths, and self-imposed limitations based on fear or comfort can be detrimental to the pursuit of liberation. Here’s why:
- Lack of Authenticity: When we conform mindlessly to societal expectations, we often engage in suppression of our true selves, while we force ourselves to conform to norms that may not align with our values, passions, or aspirations. This can lead to a sense of disconnection from our authentic desires and hinder personal growth and self-discovery.
- Limited Exploration: Following, without full buy-in, prescribed paths, restricts our ability to explore new possibilities and venture into uncharted territories that might be suitable for our persona. It confines us to predetermined routes, denying us the opportunity to tap into our full potential and discover alternative paths that may lead to liberation and fulfillment.
- Fear-Based Choices: Making decisions grossely based on fear or unjustifiedly seeking comfort can keep us trapped in familiar but stagnant situations. It prevents us from taking risks, embracing challenges, and stepping outside our comfort zones, which are often necessary for personal growth, liberation and lasting happiness.
- External Validation: Conforming to societal expectations without a critic mindset often stems from a desire for external validation and acceptance. When we rely on others’ opinions to define our worth or blindlessly conform to their standards, we relinquish our personal power and impede our own growth and self-empowerment.
- Limited Self-Expression: Conformity can restrict our ability to express our true thoughts, emotions, and desires: authentically. This self-censorship can stifle creativity, individuality, and the exploration of alternative perspectives, hindering our personal growth and inhibiting our journey towards liberation.
As we conclude this episode, let us reflect on the profound truth that while we may not be physical bond slaves, we have the capacity to liberate ourselves from the mental and emotional chains that confine us. True freedom begins within, by recognizing our inherent worth and embracing the limitless possibilities that await all of us.
